The heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis was commissioned in 1932 and saw extensive combat duty in the South Pacific theater during World War II. After completing a secret mission delivering parts for the atom bomb in July 1945, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a Japanese submarine. William Beeker Billings was born in Indianapolis and graduated from Purdue University in 1938. He joined the U.S. Navy the following year and became an aviator (pilot). He was assigned to the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis where he served as the ship's observation plane pilot. In early 1942 Billings married Margaret McNeely also of Indianapolis.
